Simply Homemade Hot Fudge

You don’t need to venture out to the nearest ice cream parlor to have a delicious hot fudge sundae, with a few simple steps and ingredients you can make your own from scratch.


Hot fudge on cold vanilla ice cream is one of the simplest pleasures one can have in life. The rich, chocolatey ribbons combined with the cold, yet melty ice cream, is one of my personal favorite sensations, making my taste buds sing. However, my desire for such childhood delights is a bit cumbersome. Venturing out into the wild world in search of ice cream bliss takes more effort than making your own from scratch. By combining a few simple ingredients, you can have a rich and luscious hot fudge that you can be proud to put on your ice cream.


Hot Fudge

*Makes 12oz. 

¼ cup unsalted grass-fed butter

4 oz. semi-sweet baking chocolate 

1 cup heavy cream

¾ cup granulated sugar

6 TBSP unsweetened cocoa powder 

¼ tsp kosher salt

2 tsp vanilla extract


In a small pot, melt together your butter and baking chocolate over medium low heat, whisking frequently.

Once the chocolate and butter have melted, slowly whisk in the heavy cream until it is completely incorporated into the chocolate. 

Whisk in your granulated sugar, cocoa powder, and salt until combined.

Keep over medium low heat, whisking frequently until the chocolate starts to boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.

Remove the fudge from the heat and stir in your vanilla extract.

Serve hot fudge sauce warm over ice cream or allow to cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a heat safe jar. Store your delicious fudge in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.


*Notes:

Before enjoying your stored hot fudge, portion out what you want to use in a microwave safe cup or bowl and microwave your fudge for 20 seconds.

It is important to make sure the fudge comes to a boil during the cooking process. If you undercook the fudge it will be grainy from the sugar not being properly cooked. 

The quality of your butter and chocolate is very important when making a delicious hot fudge. The grass-fed butter adds a deep richness while a good quality chocolate gives the fudge a chocolate flavor that isn’t too sweet.
