The Patchwork Kitchen Garden: Season Two

Week Four: Sunny Days are Here to Stay

As we approach May, the days have become more sunny and there’s a warmer feeling in the air. You can feel it on your skin and it’s a much needed change from the damp, chilly spring weather. The plants in the garden seem to think so too.

During this past week, we’ve had a mixture of warm weather and gentle rain storms which seemed to have agreed with the garden. My hosta in the front yard has doubled in size and my Woodland Phlox are ready to bloom any day now. But most importantly, my tulips finally decided to show me their true colors. Yes! The tulips have finally bloomed and they couldn’t be prettier with their coral colored petals.

The flowers aren’t the only things thriving in the sun, my beans started to sprout and peek out of their soil bed. Some of the seeds must have gotten washed during the rainstorms however because I have a few seedlings coming up too close together. I’m hoping as they mature and branch out it will be less of an issue. I will just keep an eye on them until then and hope that they continue to thrive.

Beans aren’t the only vegetable thriving outside, my peas also have decided to grace me with their presence and started to become proper pea shoots with their little tendrils. Hopefully in the coming week they become large enough to reach the wire trellis. With the amount of sunshine we’ve been getting in NEPA it shouldn’t be a problem.

The forecast for the coming week is mostly sunny and hardly any rain which is good for some parts of the garden and not so good for other parts. My strawberry plants will benefit for as much sunshine as it can possibly gather while my mushrooms would prefer the damp and dreary days. No matter what, it shouldn't be a problem as long as I pay attention to every plant’s needs and make sure everyone is happy everything should be thriving.

Well, that’s all I have for this week. I'll be very busy this week tending to the garden and enjoying all my beautiful blooms. To give the rest of the garden a peek, simply check out the gallery down below. Until next week, Happy Gardening!
